Melbourne is among the world’s top 10 cities to work in for tech workers based on weekly rent and commute times, according to a study by real estate agency Savills.
Savills’ Tech Cities report has ranked 22 cities at the “forefront of global tech” based on more than 100 metrics in each location and studying employees of tech startups and scale-ups.
Overall, the study lists Austin, Texas, as the world’s best city for tech workers, ahead of San Francisco. Melbourne came it at number 14 in the overall rankings, beating Tel Aviv and Seoul.
Melbourne appears to be the only city analysed from Australia.
According to Quartz, commute time is an important factor for workers because it can have an impact on levels of anxiety and overall satisfaction with life.
According to Savills’ report, Austin and Melbourne offer tech workers the shortest commutes to work with 16 minutes and 19 minutes per one-way trip, respectively.
Hong Kong and Bengaluru have the longest commute times with tech workers spending 46 minutes and 47 minutes respectively to get to work.
When it comes to rent paid by tech workers, Savills found Seoul to be the cheapest location with $US153.03 ($201) spent on weekly rent, compared with $US306.26 ($403) in Melbourne.
San Francisco is listed as the most expensive city, with the weekly rent paid by tech workers sitting at $US775.45 ($1020).
