Handset manufacturer Samsung has unleashed its latest entry into the smartphone sector – the Wave.

The handset, which was announced at the Mobile World Congress, will hit Australian shores mid-year and is designed to compete against the Android operating system, iPhone and Windows Mobile platforms.

The device will come with its own application store, with a number of programs tailored for the handset such as games, GPS software, eBook readers and utility apps.

It also features a new Super AMOLED screen, which the company says will provide brighter colours and is thinner than other touchscreens.

Full integration is also included with social network Facebook. But the handset comes as Windows Mobile 7 was also announced by Microsoft, giving the Wave plenty of competition.
