Apple has announced it sold 1.7 million iPhone 4 units during the three days to June 26, the most successful launch in the company’s history.
Chief executive Steve Jobs said in a statement the launch exceeded expectations, but he also apologised to “customers who were turned away” due to limited supply.
The extensive demand suggests the Australian launch will be more popular than last year’s launch of the iPhone 3GS. Analysts also expect shortage problems locally as well.
The new phone features upgraded hardware, a new design and the ability to shoot video in HD. But it has also received criticism for its problems, specifically related to an antenna issue that occurs when the phone is held a certain way. Apple is reportedly working on a fix.
