The latest version of the open source image editing suite GIMP has been released for Linux, with ports expected for Windows and OSX expected shortly.

GIMP 2.8 has been released after three years of work, with the application and most plug-ins ported to the Cairo graphics API.

Key user interface improvements in the new version include the ability to use maths equations in image size entries, on-canvas text editing, a single-window mode, and multi-column dock windows.

The new version also introduces a number of new tools and plug-ins features including a new cage transform tool, an expanded brush dynamics engine, and experimental graphics tablet support through a new widget.
