How Advanced Mobility Analytics Group started
In response to rising transportation challenges and growing concerns about road safety in Australia, a trio of PhDs decided to establish Advanced Mobility Analytics Group (AMAG). With more than 70 years of collective experience in analysing motor vehicle-involved crashes on transport systems, the co-founders recognised the limitations of traditional approaches to road safety.
So they decided to leverage cutting-edge technology and develop a solution that could help save lives. Their guiding principle was clear: understanding where, when and why collisions and near-misses happen is essential to preventing them. Thus, a cloud-integrated, AI-driven analytical platform that can revolutionise traffic safety was born.
Growth
The business was born out of extensive research and development and collaboration between academic researchers and co-founders, Dr Simon Washington and Dr Tarek Sayed. The challenge of transitioning this technology from a university setting to a commercial enterprise, however, was considerable. They also needed to secure project financing and ongoing investment.
Another stumbling block on the path to growth was overcoming scepticism about their experience and expertise, especially when engaging with government entities. But with a viable solution in hand and plenty of data to back up its claims, AMAG leveraged strong collaborations and partnerships, as well as government engagements, which ultimately led to its successful expansion.
Where to next
AMAG continues to refine the science of crash prediction by incorporating video analytics, AI, deep learning and advanced statistical techniques. For the near team, it plans on further development, testing, and validation on roads and intersections across 21 cities in eight countries.
Future goals include enhancing its SMART SAF proprietary software to support broader client objectives, such as future transport planning, city growth, traffic planning and infrastructure investment decision-making. The company is particularly excited about 2024 thanks to solid expectations of growth, with a 25% increase in key growth and a doubling of export sales.
Advanced Mobility Analytics Group won the Smart50 Innovation Award for 2023.
