Canon has announced Canon HMD (Head Mounted Display), a new augmented reality device set to compete against Google Glass.

According to Extreme Tech, the new Canon device uses visual markers placed around a room, along with optical and magnetic sensors, to create its augmented reality environment.

The company has created a development platform, dubbed the MR (mixed reality) platform, to help developers create mixed reality images to display on the device.

Augmented reality is a form of virtual reality that superimposes digital images over a real-life scene being viewed through a device.

While often used through smartphone and tablet apps, major companies including Google have been working on dedicated augmented reality glasses aimed at the consumer market.
