Google’s announcement that it is closing its popular Google Reader RSS newsfeed service has led to explosive growth for many of the service’s competitors.

Electronista reports that over 500,000 users signed up for one competitor, Feedly, within 48 hours of Google’s announcement, with the service’s bandwidth usage increasing 10-fold as a result.

The iOS app climbed to the top of the iTunes store sales rankings as a result, with CNN’s news app claiming second place.

Other RSS newsfeed services are also cashing in on the news, with Digg announcing it’s developing an RSS newsfeed app, while rival service NewsBlur says it had to add 14 additional servers to cope with growing demand from Google Reader users.
