In the past five years mobile phone use has exploded in developing countries, but there is one factor that has limited its uptake – the lack of a reliable power source for phone chargers.

According to Springwise, however, that problem could soon be a thing of the past. Mobile phone giant Motorola has set up 55 solar-powered kiosks in Uganda that provides phone recharging to people with their phones.

Not only can the kiosks can charge up to 20 phones at a time, but they also provide the basis for microbusinesses for local Ugandans. Motorola provides entrepreneurial women with business training and the skills to sell and fix mobile phones and accessories.

The budding mobile entrepreneurs can then set up shop at the kiosks – that’s power to the people in more ways than one.
