Qantas has scrapped 18 flights today and may have to cancel more as engineers strike for a 5% pay rise.

Yesterday six flights were cancelled and there were six hour delays for some passengers flying internationally. More stoppages are expected on Friday, resulting in more disruption for business people and holiday makers.

The rolling stoppages are affecting flights in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane. It is expected that there will be more consolidation and cancellations as the day progresses. Consolidation means reducing flight numbers by using bigger aircraft to combine flights.

Qantas is refusing to increase its 3% pay offer to its 1500-strong engineer workforce.

Meanwhile The Australian reported this morning that Qantas is looking to permanently move many critical maintenance jobs offshore by employing engineers in London and the United States.
