A Skype application for the iPhone that allows users to make phone calls and instant messages over internet connections has recorded over one million downloads in the two days since its release.

Skype, a voice over internet application that is owned by auction house eBay, allows its users to make phone calls over the internet with other Skype users. It is among the most popular messaging services available on the web.

In less than two days, Skype for iPhone has been downloaded at a rate of about six downloads every second, Skype employee Peter Parks wrote on the company blog.

“This is a phenomenal performance, and we’re confident that it’s one of the fastest-downloaded iPhone apps ever. We’ll be back next week with an update.”
