Labor are missing a few tricks on their own search engine front with Liberal buying out the top paid search engine spot with a page about Labor’s failures. This is also the case for terms like “Labor Party”. Labor are doing a good job on the Liberal keywords although have forgotten their branded search terms to defend their own territory.

There aren’t enough other ads that block out the Liberal ads and Liberal are getting way too much share of voice here.

Gillard is doing a great job on Twitter, with her regular updating and almost double the number of followers. Unfortunately Abbott hasn’t updated his Twitter account since July 17, whereas Gillard seems to update several times a day.

Gillard is following a lot more of her followers than Abbott and is perhaps going with a reciprocal following strategy, where as Abbott wants to be the voice and is only following fellow Liberal Party members. Looks like he isn’t very interested in engaging in conversation with other Twitterers.

An interesting note is that there are several fake Twitter profiles with Australian websites leveraging the boom in traffic for benefit. A lot of the fake Twitter accounts are parodies and are actually quite funny.

The Liberal Party seem to be a lot more popular on Facebook although a lot more people like Gillard than Abbott.

A missed opportunity here would be for the parties to regularly change their profile pictures and potentially publish interesting things that they are doing in them, eg. unveiling some new policy.

Liberal are leveraging Facebook advertising with their campaign ads, Labor should consider doing something similar.
