Australia is set to become the world’s biggest cotton exporter after a big jump in production and strong global demand.

The nation’s cotton production is on target to increase by 89% this financial year, with 1.1 million tonnes tipped to be produced in 2011/12. The extraordinary result comes despite almost half of Australian cotton crops being affected by flooding.

The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) predicts cotton exports will increase by a further 12.5% in 2012-13.
