Social media giant Facebook has updated its Instagram photo sharing app to add support for videos.

After updating to the latest version of the app for Apple iOS and Android devices, users will have the option of pressing a movie camera icon, allowing them to capture up to 15 seconds of video per clip.

Aside from being able to upload and share video clips through the service, users will also be able to choose between 13 video filters and use a favourite scene from a video as their cover image.

Meanwhile, following a controversy late last year over the social media service potentially claiming copyright over its users’ photos, the company has issued a statement clarifying the ownership of videos uploaded to the service.

“We’re still committed to making sure you have control over all of your content. Only the people who you let see your photos will be able to see your videos. And as with photos, you own your videos,” Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom states.

The release comes after Twitter released a version of its short video app, called the Vine, to Android users earlier this month.
