Four in 10 wealthy Australians (those earning more than $150,000 a year) support higher taxes on the rich. However, almost everyone surveyed in this bracket believes they are overtaxed, according to a new survey by progressive think-tank Per Capita.

The annual survey asked 1,422 Australians for their views on a range of taxation and spending issues.

The survey found a clear perception that Australians are overtaxed and poorly served by public spending, wrote Per Capita’s executive director David Hetherington. “The single most important driver of this perception appears to be the Federal Opposition’s highly successful campaign against ‘big new taxes’ and for ‘cutting the waste’.”
