Business can be a wonderful force for good.
That purpose to make money and drive good drives the internal process of Neometro, and how I spend my time.
From my own business experience, being involved in multiple projects at the one time does open you up to new ideas and new thinking, and that’s a very sensible, commercial thing for people to be doing.
From mixing with [people on other boards] you absorb new ideas, you absorb new ways of thinking, which you can quite often take back to other parts of your life, that’s something which I think people can easily overlook benefit of doing that.
If all your energies are in one industry one can become myopic. It’s quite a dangerous place to be, whereas if you open yourself to other things you can learn a huge amount
Having a social purpose to your business has all sorts of commercial benefits particularly in engaging with staff. I think in a lot of ways the GFC has been a really positive thing because it’s changed the way people perceive material success.
I like to be working with people where I’m slightly out of my depth.
You focus on things where you can have a meaningful impact and through doing that you use your bandwidth in an effective manner.
Work and life tend to merge a bit into each other. I personally need to be careful; you don’t want to be building sandcastles with your kids while checking your emails.
I’m a pretty motivated person, if I didn’t like what I was doing it would probably be a different situation. I’d need something to really drive me, but at the moment I just wake up, jump out of bed.
