The uptake of high-speed broadband in China is accelerating at an astonishing pace, with almost a million people signing up with the country’s biggest telco last month.

Bloomberg reports that 890,000 people signed up for high speed broadband with China Telecom Corp in June, the biggest monthly spike in new users since broadband came on the scene.

Amazingly, according to China Telecom it had 40 million high speed broadband subscribers on its books at the end of June, giving it a big chunk of the 220 million internet users in the country.

The pick-up in broadband subscribers more than offset the 580,000 fixed line phone customers China Telecom lost in June as cheap mobile phone services take over.

As if to put China Telecom’s achievement in the shade, China’s biggest mobile provider, China Mobile, gained 7.55 million mobile subs in June. It now has more than 414 million mobile customers. Mind blowing.
