Californian house designer and developer LJ Urban has created quite a radical program to try and use the profits it makes from housebuilding in the US to also build some social good in poorer countries around the world.
According to Springwise, for every home LJ Urban sells in an eco-community it is developing in the Californian city of Sacramento, it will fund the complete training of a stonemason to build sustainable homes for families in Burkina Faso in western Africa.
Even better, rather than fork out mountains of moola advertising its new development, LJ Urban is seeking to fuel a viral campaign by promising to train a mason in Burkina Faso for every 100,000 people that visit its website, up to a total of 20 stonemasons.
To train the masons, LJ Urban is partnering with the Association La Voûte Nubienne, a local organisation that has already trained about 60 local masons to build durable homes out of earth bricks and mortar in the small African nation.
