If you put Google and Wikipedia in a blender, what would you come up with? The answer is Wikitude – a new tool that uses Google maps and the information of Wikipedia to provide an extensively detailed navigation tool.
If a user types in their present location and an intended location, Wikitude will show the estimated distance, and display a Wikipedia entry on the destination.
Users can also type in a generic search term such as “museums” or “restaurants” and Wikitude will give a list of destinations to choose from.
The product, which has been in development for five years, can be used as a replacement for travel guides and maps. So far the tool has 350,000 points of interest catalogued, but founder Phillip Breuss has plans for more.
