The MyGene Sport and Exercise genetic test is an innovative, Australian-developed genetic test that analyses specific genes associated with an individual’s sport and exercise performance. Following laboratory analysis, a report is generated that can help in developing a specific, personalised training program around an individual’s unique genetic profile to give faster, more targeted results.

What does genetics have to do with sport and exercise performance?

Exercise and sporting performance is influenced by many different factors – some of these are genetic. Genes play varying roles in determining the different traits people have, such as muscle fibre composition and oxygen intake. For example, a person’s endurance performance is up to 50% influenced by genetics.

The MyGene Sport and Exercise panel of genes has been developed using an evidence-based approach, primarily drawing on key genes from the human gene map. Evidence shows that these genes directly relate to physical performance and health-related fitness.

The results of this test will help an individual understand more about whether genetically, they are better suited to endurance or power-based activities – or a mixture of the two. The results will also explain additional exercise, health and medical information that a health care professional or personal trainer can assist further with understanding.

How can this test help improve an individual’s sport and exercise performance?

The MyGene Sport and Exercise Genetic Test Report provides detailed information on whether an individual is genetically suited to:

  • Low, moderate or high levels of endurance;
  • Low, moderate or high levels of power;
  • Low, moderate or high rates of muscle recovery after intense exercise; and
  • Moderate or high injury risk of specific sport and exercise activities.

The MyGene Sport and Exercise genetic test analyses variations in a number of different genes that are associated with exercise performance. Together with a report explaining what the results mean and how to apply them to training, individuals can select specific exercises and sporting activities that they may be more likely to excel in. A training program can then be developed or refined to make training more efficient and effective.
