Dear Aunty B,
I read with horror the story about the guy you described as the worst boss in the world yesterday.
Now, I never abuse my staff or say offensive things, but I do love swearing and I drop the f-bomb quite regularly. I usually do it to emphasise a point or add a little humour to the situation.
But after reading your story, I am worried I might be offending some staff anyway.
Do I need to tone it down or am I okay?
Swear Jar,
Sydney
Dear Swear Jar,
I reckon yesterday’s story would have caused a number of managers around Australia to think about how much they swear – and as someone who does drop the occasional f-bomb, I am in that group too.
Look, I think a bit of self-diagnosis is necessary here. If you think you might be swearing too much and you’re worried some staff might be starting to become offended and that’s probably enough to tone things down.
If you know your team well and your confident they are okay with the odd expletive used in the right way (and I reckon there is a right way) then don’t worry too much.
But at the end of the day, we probably all should remember the words of our mothers – there is nothing smart or funny or cool about swearing. If you can stop doing it, you probably should.
Be smart,
Your Aunty B
