Millions of Australian workers are dissatisfied with their jobs, and would also more likely be happy with a career they had chosen themselves, Galaxy Research Shows.
The Galaxy Careers survey reports one in five Australians are unhappy with their profession, and suggests “high levels of dissatisfaction may be explained by the finding that just 25% of workers actively planned their career”, while over half “fell into” their jobs.
Higher education may be a culprit, as 86% of workers with a university education felt pressured to stay in their career, while 70% of Australians without any degree did not feel pressured to work in one area. Additionally, one third of workers don’t feel their job accurately reflects who they are as a person, while 8% feel their job reveals nothing about them at all.
Workers also feel the hiring process should start to change. While most agree previous experience should be taken into account, 75% believe personality should be a large factor, and 42% believe personal interests are important.
