The Smart & Lasting Award pays tribute to businesses that appeared on multiple Smart50 lists, and which illustrate the values of the Smart50 by displaying innovation, resilience and a sense of community. This year, it is presented to a Smart50 regular since 2022: Tank Stream Labs.

More than a physical co-working environment, Tank Stream Labs was devised in 2012 as a dynamic community where startups and scale-ups can connect to collaborate, innovate and thrive – a space for Australian entrepreneurs to share meaningful connections, tailored resources and invaluable mentorship.

The organisation found its niche in the Sydney startup scene, rapidly expanding from one location to four and diversifying into complementary businesses such as business development, consulting, branding and marketing, events, recruitment, and software development.

However, when the COVID-19 pandemic led to lockdowns and restrictions, it realised it had to adapt quickly to ensure continuity and support for its members. An immediate pivot to virtual events and enhanced digital support systems was the first step, accompanied by an expansion of TSL’s online resources and business services to meet the needs of members facing significant operation and financial challenges.

Its launch of the S2S Summit, an annual event for entrepreneurs, provided a platform for startups to showcase their innovations, connect with investors, and gain exposure on a broader scale. This event not only promotes entrepreneurship but also attracts attention to Australia’s growing tech ecosystem, positioning the country as a hub for innovation and investment.

Growth is on the agenda for TSL, with the business aiming to replicate its successful model in other major cities across the country, providing entrepreneurs with access to premium workspaces, tailored support programs and valuable networking opportunities.

This expansion will enable TSL to reach a broader audience of startups and scale-ups, driving innovation and economic growth in new markets. In addition to this, TSL looks to forge partnerships with key stakeholders in the entrepreneurial ecosystem, including government agencies, industry associations, and corporate partners.

TSL also placed 20th on this year’s Smart50 list.
