Upmarket food trucks serving gourmet street grub are the new way to eat out in Melbourne’s inner city, following trends in New York and Los Angeles.
Trucks include “gourmet canteen” Le Sausage, and Taco Truck and Beatbox Kitchen, owned by Raph Rashid.
Rashid sells up to 200 tacos and burgers daily, and also operates at the Meredith, Golden Plains, Laneway and Big Day Out festivals.
“We understand there’s a novelty factor, but we’ve always been dedicated to the food more than anything else,” he says.
Le Sausage owner Alex Talimanidis says his truck is “getting busier every day”, rotating through Northcote, Westgarth and Preston, selling chorizo and Hungarian sausages.
“Having good food from the trucks is just a cool concept… You just don’t think you’re going to get dim sims or potato cakes,” Talimanidis says.
Melbourne City Council plans to add more sites to its city locations, including St Kilda Road and Peel Street in North Melbourne. If you have a flair for food, this might be worth looking into.
