One of the most interesting things we’ve started to notice as more and more Australian startups are featured on Product Hoist is the number of popular startups based outside of the traditional startup hubs Sydney and Melbourne. In fact, only one of the five most popular Aussie startups on Product Hoist from June was from Sydney.
An easy way for teachers to update parents on what their children learned in class. Perth-based startup Today We Learned is a website and app that guides teachers through a 60-second update, which empowers parents to start learning conversations at home with their children. Mindful of creating too much work for teachers, founder Jason O’Neil has worked closely with both teachers and parents throughout the development process. As top commenter Raph says, “It’s good to see innovation in the learning space that isn’t a new learning management system.”
2. iAuditor
The world’s most powerful inspection checklist app, iAuditor is an app developed by SafetyCulture, a startup out of Townsville, QLD. The app has gained traction in over 50 countries worldwide and is used more than 32,000 times per day. With clients such as Volvo, eBay and Coles, iAuditor is a great example of how Australian startups can gain international traction by providing a simple, effective solution to a common customer pain point – in this case carrying out and recording safety inspections.
3. Travel Eggs
Don’t be a tourist, be an explorer. Another startup out of Perth, soon to launch Travel Eggs is a digital travel guide that combines content from local tourism authorities with guides created by locals to help you uncover hidden gems when exploring a new city.
4. VentureCrowd
Equity-based crowdfunding for Australian startups. Last year, Sydney-based VentureCrowd helped Australian taxi-hailing and mobile payments app Ingogo raise $1.2 million in equity crowdfunding as part of a $9.1 million round and more recently they have expanded to crowdfunded property investments allowing individuals to expand their property portfolio with investments from as little as $100.
5. Techboard
Building a community of people interested in Perth and Western Australia’s startups. Still in its early stages of development, Techboard has listed over 400 Western Australian tech startups. Co-founder Rafael Kimberly-Brown says “they are aiming to add value to the WA startup ecosystem by showcasing and connecting them with users, talent and investors”.
