It makes sense that a grumpy entrepreneur like me should like Twitter. Short, sharp messages. To the point. No wastage. No hot air. It’s how I like to be communicated with and it’s how I like to communicate.

Which is why I was interested to read this great blog by Frank Addante, who is the founder and CEO of US ad sales platform the Rubicon Project. He’s taken the Twitter style of communication to a new level by making it a key part of the way his people report to him.

Frank asks his reports to answer five questions each week:

  • Highlights?
  • What are you working on?
  • What do you need?
  • What are you worried about?

These are four smart questions to ask. What else do you want to know as a leader?

But that’s not the point. Frank asks his reports to keep the answers to three to five dot points and says no dot point can be longer than the 140 characters used in Twitter.

What a smart idea. No bullsh-t, no bluster, no flowery explanations or excuses. Just succinct, usable information.
