Japanese electronics giant Sony has announced that is has developed a new laser technology that will allow it to put 25 times as much data on a disc as is possible with current Blu-Ray technology.
The technology, developed in conjunction with Tohoku University, will allow up to one terabyte of data to be put onto a disc, compared to the 50 gigabytes a Blu-Ray can hold.
Commentators suggest the new technology could allow movie studios to put up to 50 high definition films onto a single disc.
Sony is reported to be testing the new technology, although there have been no hints as to when the technology might be on the shelves of the world’s electronics stores.
