The New York Times is developing a new type of social news service called News.Me, with a launch expected before the end of the year.

The publication is currently working with Betaworks to bring the app to launch, which has been in development for the past six months. The company has worked with various internet developers including Betaworks and Bit.y.

Betaworks vice president of research and development, Michael Zimbalist, told the NYT that the app will be, “abstract… a vision of how social sharing and the real-time web are going to influence the news consumption experience. We decided to develop a prototype that we thought was illustrative of where the world was heading.”

The news comes shortly after the New York Times said it would finish publishing its print edition, with a date to be announced in the future.
