Facebook has unveiled a new mobile site that will replace its three existing sites, saying it wanted to create a site that would work across expensive smartphones and phones with limited features.

The new site, m.Facebook.com, will replace Facebook’s previous sites at touch.facebook.com (which was aimed at high-end smartphones) and the previous m.facebook.com site (which had a simplified interface and was aimed at phones with more limited features).

A third site, 0.facebook.com, which was stripped down even further than the previous m.facebook.com site will also be amalgamated.

“Building for the mobile web is a big challenge. You have to plan for thousands of different devices with varying capabilities, screen sizes, keyboards, CSS and JavaScript support, underlying technologies, and browser bugs,” Facebook product designer Lee Byron said in a blog post.

“We think it’s important to provide an excellent mobile web experience. Now, whenever we launch new features on the mobile site, they’ll be available on any mobile browser, presented in the best possible experience.”
