The Linux Mint project have released the first stable version of the Cinnamon desktop environment.

According to PC World, the open source Linux desktop is available as a free download for most major Linux distributions.

The Cinnamon project was created by users dissatisfied with the radical changes in interface between GNOME 2 and GNOME 3.

The aim was to create a desktop based on GNOME 3, but with an interface that would be more familiar to GNOME 2 users.

Cinnamon 1.2 is stable release, meaning that it is ready for everyday use in server and desktop environments as a replacement for other desktops environments such as KDE or GNOME.
