Samsung has hit out at Apple marketing its new iPad as being a 4G LTE device in Australia.

A Samsung spokesperson told the Sydney Morning Herald that Apple marketing its iPad as being a 4G device in Australia had the potential to confuse consumers, and stressed that the Galaxy Tab was the only device compatible with Australian 4G networks.

“My personal view is that I think it is very confusing for consumers,” Samsung Australia vice president of telecommunications, Tyler McGee, told the publication. “I guess consumers will, if they buy [it] under the impression that it is 4G, soon be disappointed in their buying decision.”

Unlike carriers overseas who use 700 MHz as the frequency for their 4G LTE networks, both Telstra and Optus’ forthcoming network use 1800 MHz, which is not compatible with the 4G LTE features of the new iPad.

In contrast, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 8.9 4G, released on Telstra 4G last month, is compatible with the 1800 MHz frequency used by the Australian carriers.
