A member of German Parliament who obtained a court order blocking Wikipedia for two days has apologised for overreacting.

Lutz Heilmann, member of the Left party, obtained a court-ordered ban on the site after it incorrectly cited he had ties to the communist security police force the Stasi.

He says he was fed up by false statements and incorrect citations, but has since acknowledged that he took his retribution one step too far.

“I didn’t think it through and didn’t anticipate the consequences,” he told the Tageszeitung newspaper.

Wikipedia is one of the world’s most visited sites, and is completely edited by users – but the site employs a staff to make sure dubious entries are swiftly deleted.
