Apple’s share of the global tablet market fell to just 35.5% during the second quarter of 2013, significantly below the 82% marketshare recently claimed by Apple chief executive Tim Cook, according to new market research by TrendForce.

Overall, tablet shipments worldwide for the quarter were estimated at 41.1 million units. 

Apple shipped 14.6 million units during the quarter, claiming 35.5% of the worldwide market, significantly below the 82% marketshare claimed by Cook during the iOS7 launch keynote during Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference.

Nonetheless, Apple remains significantly ahead of second-placed rival Samsung, which saw 8.8 million unit shipments for 21.4% marketshare.

Rounding out the top five vendors were Asus (excluding the Google Nexus 7) on 1.6 million units (3.9%), Acer on 1.5 million units (3.6%) and Amazon on 1.1 million units (2.7%).

Sitting outside the top five are Microsoft on 900,000 units, Google on 700,000 and Lenovo on around 600,000.

Other brands accounted for 3.9% of the market or around 1.6 million units, while low-cost generic “white box” tablets accounted for 9.7 million units – more than Samsung – along with 23.5% of the market.
