Facebook has knocked MySpace from its position as Australia’s favourite social networking site for the first time, a new survey has found.

Facebook was the preferred online social networking destination for 23% of the 30,066 respondents to the online poll recently conducted by Permission Corp for advertising trade magazine B&T.

MySpace lagged well behind, with just 11.5% prepared to say MySpace was their favourite social networking site.

The result is a significant reversal on the results of a previous poll in September 2007 in which MySpace was the first choice social networking destination for 18.75% of people online, ahead of YouTube on 15.9% and Facebook, then on a relatively meagre 11.9%.

Facebook has drawn its new support in almost equal measures from MySpace and YouTube, with both of those sites dropping support to now rank first with 11.5% of survey respondents.

Bebo was the next most liked online networking site with 2.6% support, while 40% of people said they don’t visit any social networking sites.

Worldwide, for December 2007, Facebook had 13 billion unique visitors, compared to MySpace with 38 billion, according to online metrics company Comscore.
