The Microsoft App Store has passed a key point, with over 100,000 programs now available through the store.

The milestone is a crucial one. Microsoft joined the app game late, and is still far behind both the iOS and Android stores. App availability is a key stepping stone assisting popularity.

“Thanks for a great build! Just passed 100k apps in the Windows Store” Microsoft said in a tweet earlier this week.

The company also noted there are now more than 10,000 published developers on the site.

Apps have been a big part of the Microsoft landscape over the past year, especially as part of the Windows 8 ecosystem, which has introduced a totally new user interface instead of the traditional Windows desktop format.
