Telstra has announced it has completed the migration of all existing copper services in the South Brisbane Exchange area to fibre optic cable, with over 18,000 services switched over in the process.

The rollout has been completed independently of the NBN rollout.

The rollout covered the suburbs of South Brisbane, West End, Dutton Park, Highgate Hill and a section of Fairfield.

“With migrations now complete, over the next five months we will be decommissioning the exchange and associated infrastructure, including the reworking of Telstra’s underground conduit network, the recovery of copper cables and the recycling of all scrap materials,” says Telstra’s director of fixed and data access engineering, David Piltz.

Under the upgrade, the company laid 284 kilometres of cable through 26.4 kilometres of new conduit and replaced or upgraded 1,661 pits.
