While the US election on Wednesday provided plenty of nail-biting anticipation, CNN viewers were treated to a special surprise.
During the news organisation’s election coverage, political anchor Wolf Blitzer was able to communicate with a reporter in the field live via a hologram.
Jessica Yellin, on the ground in Chicago, was filmed using over 30 different cameras to transmit a live image of her body – complete with a fuzzy blue glow.
“They shoot my body at different angles and I’m told that’s what transmits my entire body image back to New York,” she said during the broadcast.
Here it is if you missed it on Wednesday.
But don’t expect the hologram reporter to become a regular feature of news services if viewer reviews are any guide.
Engadget was savage: “Not only does this technology seem completely creepy, but it’s without a doubt one of the most useless and unnecessary pieces of phantasmagoric TV ever enacted.”
Marguerite Reardon of CNET was similarly dismissive. “As a viewer watching the broadcast in my living room, I thought the whole thing was a bit silly and sort of annoying.”
