The WordPress content management system (CMS) is used on just under half of the websites listed in Technorati’s top 100 blogs list, a new report has revealed.

According to the report, conducted by Pingdom and published by ITWorld, 40 of the blogs on the Technorati list are self-hosted WordPress websites with a further nine hosted at WordPress.com.

The next nearest competitors to WordPress include Movable Type and Drupal, which are used to host seven and six of the sites on the list respectively. Custom content management systems are another popular option for high traffic websites, with 14 of the top 100 sites (including Buzzfeed, Gizmodo and Gawker) opting for a custom solution.

Major WordPress hosted sites include Mashable, TechCrunch, Think Progress and The Next Web are all hosted on WordPress, while The Huffington Post is hosted on Movable Type.
